Altamont, Tennessee – Mr. Marcus Smartt Jr., 86, passed away Tuesday May 9, 2023, at his home.

He was born in McMinnville, Tennessee on April 5, 1937.  Marcus was a timberman and farmer and served as Mayor of Altamont for several years. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Altamont Ward. He loved playing baseball and watching the Atlanta Braves.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Campbell Smartt; parents, Marcus Smartt Sr. and Lillie Smartt; brothers, Tommie, Leonard, Hoover, Jessie and H.B. Smartt.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Gipson Smartt; daughters, Debora Lind, Crossville, TN and Carla (Will) Bridges, Bellvidere, TN; 3 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; stepson, Chad Bess; a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday in the funeral home chapel with Bishops, Jody Campbell and Aaron Barrett officiating with burial to follow in the Fults Cemetery.

Visitation: 2:00 PM – 9:00 PM Thursday at Layne Funeral Home, Altamont, Tennessee.
